House Clothes

How to look good at home

I was helping my mother clean out her closet when I noticed that the pile of 'around-the-house-clothes' was getting larger by the minute. She was tossing all the clothes that I said no too into this pile, which believe me was quite a lot. This got me thinking... around the house clothes shouldn't just be the clothes you choose to do your cleaning in, but semi decent clothes that you would be able to wear out in public without looking like a homeless person or the cleaning lady.

Here are some items you should consider binning or donating to your local charity:
  • Reefs or Crocs- these should only be worn by adorable babies or toddlers, definitely NOT anyone over the age of 4. Instead choose Havaianas or jelly sandals.
  • Tight slogan t-shirt (e.g. I kissed a Vampire and I liked it) Instead choose loose vintage inspired t-shirts (think Madonna or classic rock band logos)
  • Clothes that do not fit- this can go both ways, if it's too big or too small. Stick with what fits you best as it will obviously look the more flattering.
  • Saggy or unflattering underwear- what looks good underneath makes you feel good on the outside (note: please bin these as charity shops will not sell these items)
  • Shoes- if they are falling apart, smelly, don't fit... or just plain ugly- BIN IT!
  • Actually come to think about it, bin anything that doesn't fit, smells, broken, ugly (e.g. if you're friends go 'agh!' when you wear it) and that you haven't worn in over a year.
Around the house clothes should consist of basic t-shirts that fit, casual harlem pants or casual shorts, a pair of Havaianas, good underwear, a headband and minimal makeup.

Remember to still keep outfits flattering and to wear a bra as you never know when someone may drop in for a cup of sugar.

Closet Space

I live in the smallest studio apartment known to man. I have started calling it my jail cell. I love the fact that it is close to the city, Coles, bus stops and the cutest Italian restaurants- and that I can call it my own. But I really didn't check out the closet space when I decided to sign the lease right then and there (mainly because the nice view of Sydney was distracting me.)

The fact that I have worked in retail for nearly 4 years didn't help my situation when I started to unpack. I went next door and bought loads of coat hangers, shoe racks, plastic draw stackers and a bottle of bubbly to help me through. But it still didn't helped. (I did however enjoy the bubbly...)

I even went through my clothes and decided to give some to charity- still no luck. Mind you, the 'charity' clothes are still in a large plastic bag on the very top of the cupboard, just encase...

There are clothes in piles on chairs in my room, stacked in bags under my bed, piled high in the cupboard and I think I sometimes even sleep on top of them. Oh, did I mention I have a couple of pairs of shoes under my desk at work?? Crazy, I know.

I have also noticed that I am only wearing a small section of my clothes and have stopped going shopping . Maybe this is a good thing- I don't know. But one thing I do know is, this will never happen again.

So anyways... Now that I am in the process of moving I need to have a massive closet clean up. So out come the plastic space bags (my best friend Chloy loves these), suit cases, boxes, willpower, determination and of course a nice bottle of bubbles.

I will tell you one thing that I have learnt from this experience, and that is to always check the closet and storage space before you sign the lease- even if there is the most spectacular view just outside the window.

Wish me luck.

Fashion Passion

I made a pack with a friend that we would not spend ANY money on material possessions, namely on clothes for 1 whole month. This was very hard considering that we both work at a clothing store on the weekends.

Well, today is officially 1 month from the day, and let me tell you it was hard. I ended up sweating if anyone mentioned a new purchase around me. I couldn't believe that I would have been like that! Can you think of a more materialistic, selfish act? I mean I should be sweating up a storm when someone mentions the suffering in Africa, or the killing of innocent animals in Canada.

I wouldn't recommend that you do this, especially if you shop as a way to relieve stress. Trust me, you will end up spending more then you save once the drought is over.

So, I now have a plan of attack for when Saturday comes. First, I will ruffle through my wardrobe throwing away any unwanted items (possibly giving them to a charity or my sisters), I will then have a list of items I need/ want. I have searched the stores I want to visit online, so that I will have some sort of budget formed. Bardot, Sportsgirl, Forever New, Myer, DJs, GP.... the list goes on. Then I will get up early enough on Saturday to hit the shops running!

Now let me tell you, this is very out of my character. Out of my friends and family I am the one saving (don't know what for...) however if I can save a dollar, I will. However, the saying goes 'you want something when its gone' (or something like that). And boy oh boy do I want it. haha.

Don't worry I will be back to normal after this weekend.

Love xx
